A family of four wanted a house that fit the way they live, and they got it without a full gut renovation. The work went only where it counted, a handful of targeted rooms rather than the whole house.
Upstairs, the hallway was far larger than it needed to be. Shrinking it gave that space back to the rooms on either side, so the main bathroom is now big enough for four to share and the children's bedroom grew with it. The stair down to the ground floor was refreshed as well.
Downstairs, a cramped galley kitchen became an open, L-shaped one with an island and a coffee bar, and the powder room was updated. Taking out the wall between the kitchen and the dining room let the ground floor run the full depth of the house, front windows to back, so daylight from the rear now reaches rooms that once sat dark. The sink looks out to the backyard, the island is where the kids pull up, and the kitchen opens straight to the dining room, where the family gathers for dinner.
