A couple in New York City set out to build the place they'd drive to on weekends, and along the way they found the house they actually wanted.

The first house we drew for them was a double-height volume with a loft, worked out with their builder down to a roof pitch shallow enough to blow the ceiling full of cellulose. When the pricing came back, we took the chance to rethink it, and what came back was better: one story, no interior walls except around the bathroom, and a wide sliding glass doors to their large property. The house had found its real size.

Everything the first scheme spent on (the loft, the stair, the partitions) turned out not to be what they wanted the house for. So, the plan came down to a few decisions. The kitchen runs compact along one wall beside the sliding glass door, so the working end of the room is also the end that opens to the trees. The bathroom and closets are the only rooms that close. From the permit sets on, the owners built it themselves, much of it by hand, down to the tile in the bathroom. It holds a couple and a weekend, and that fits in a single room.
